Researchers find cbd can be great for your dog

CBD Has a Number of Benefits for Dogs, New Research Shows

Most people can agree dogs are the best among us and rightly deserve quality care. When our furry friends get up there in years, sometimes they get around a little slower than they did in their puppy years. If your dog is feeling sore, the answer to what’s ailing them may lie in cannabidiol (CBD).

CBD is the chemical found in the cannabis plant with therapeutic benefits for humans and animals. However, it lacks the popular euphoric, or psychoactive, effects most commonly associated with its cousin marijuana, which is fueled by THC, a more mind altering compound found in the cannabis plant.

A recent research review in Veterinary Science found the newly legalized, massively popular and also little understood CBD has a number of potentially positive benefits for dogs, including the capacity to alleviate pain from osteoarthritis.

Osteoarthritis is a common kind of arthritis in dogs, affecting nearly a quarter of all dogs in their lifetime, according to the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. The condition causes a loss of joint cartilage and, left untreated, can lead to pain and decreased mobility.

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs are a common treatment for osteoarthritis in dogs. According to the review, experiments on CBD’s impact on rodents found that the drug can serve as an anti-inflammatory.

However, the research on treating osteoarthritic pain in dogs through CBD is still in the early stages. Research of this type can be difficult to conduct due to CBD’s federal status as an illicit substance.

CBD can have different impacts on dogs depending on their breed. Different species of animals also have different responses to the chemical.

The review did not find many conclusions on the impact of CBD on cats, largely because of the lack of data on CBD’s impact on feline anatomy.

Side effects observed in the review were minor, but included vomiting and an increase in liver enzymes in dogs and cats, which is an indicator liver cells are breaking down in the body at a higher rate.

“In the few pharmaco-kinetics and safety trials performed in healthy dogs,” the researchers explain, “short-term CBD use appeared to be well-tolerated by dogs with minimal side effects.”

The researchers also examined the impact CBD has on a pet’s anxiety levels. Many owners try to alleviate their pet’s anxiety, which is often triggered by separation from their owner, a change in their environment or loud noises (like thunderstorms and fireworks).

While CBD’s potential anxiety-reducing impact has been documented in humans, the review was not able to determine whether it could mitigate a dog’s anxiety. This may be due to the difference in our anatomy.

Another study did find, however, that, when administered to shelter dogs, CBD led to less aggression toward humans.
